So, this is our eighth instalment, lick number eight in the style of Buddy Guy.
So, our starting point for the scale degree that we're coming from for this lick is
starting on an E note in the key of C, and we're playing our pentatonic scale starting
on the third degree, that being an E note, on the 12th fret. I'll just take you through
the scale shape so that you kind of get an idea of where this lick is coming from.
It's going
1 ... 4 ...
1 ... 4 ...
1 ... 3 ...
1 ... 3 ...
2 ... 4 ...
1 ... 4 ...
Some people do a shift here a use some other fingers down the bottom. It's up to you. I tend to use
1 ... 4 ...
1 ... 4 ...
1 ... 3 ...
1 ... 3 ...
2 ... 4 ...
1 ... 4 ...
and we start off with a
series of triplets. We've got pretty much a full tone bend with our third finger on the 15th fret of
our B string ... then I put my fourth finger ... on the E string on the 15th fret ... to my first
finger on the 12th fret of the E string ...
What I noticed about Buddy Guy, he tends to play a lot of things repeating five times.
Just a little thing that he tends to do a fair bit of. So, in this case, it is five of those triplets:
one and ah ...
two and ah ...
three and ah ...
four and ah ...
five and ah ...
So, after our
group of triplets ... I slide my third finger all the way up to the 17th fret on the B string ...
rolling that back onto the 17th fret of the E string ... and down to the 15th on the E string ...
that's another triplet there ... then to the 17th again of the B string ... to the 15th fret of the
B string ... and then finally finishing on the 17th fret of my G ...
So, in this
final section here, we've got again, two lots of triplets. Sliding into the 17th fret:
one and ah ...
two and ah ...
and I need a
little bit of vibrato on that last note ...
Ok, so taking a
look at our right and left hand together ...
Taking a closer
look at my right hand, it's pretty much alternate picking all the way through ...
You might have
noticed at the beginning of this video, I pretty much played the lick in straight triplets
and then the second time I played it through, I played it like in a double time. You can use
your own imagination with all of these licks in the way you phrase them. We're just giving you
an example here of the way you would play the lick in a straight form, but it is up to you to
experiment with this lick and of course all of the other licks that you've been shown on these
videos.
Good luck with it.
Have fun and, once again, I'll see you next time.
